Calla Jean Wright

Calla Jean Wright

Calla Jean’s mother’s family came over with the Puritans and her father came from Germany in the late 1800s. She was born in Denver but grew up as one of four children in Laramie, Wyoming. Her father was on the faculty and later staff there. She attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming but attended the Rome branch of Loyola University for a year while her father was with the UN. In 1995 she got her Master’s degree in counseling from Liberty University.

Calla Jean came to the Lord as a junior in college, met Joe at an evangelistic meeting in Denver and has served with him as a missionary in Austria for almost 33 years. She walks and lifts weights several times a week (not from enjoyment), reads, cooks and does different crafts as various times (sewing, Austria painting, knitting, etc.)

First Job:  Working in a bank while in college. First job in Denver - teaching English and reading at Smiley Junior High School

Life Bible Verse:  I don’t do this, because I need different Bible verses at different times of my life. My first one was John 14:27, but I have also been guided by John 15:5, 1 Ki 3:9, Phil 4:13 & 19, etc. Right now, I am holding on to Phil 2:13 as I go deeper into my life with Christ.

Some Favorite Travel Memories:  Living in Rome as a junior in college, Rothenburg, Jerusalem, Petra in Jordan, a Norwegian Fjord cruise, a houseboat on Lake Powell, various “retreats” with Joe and a Civil War battlefields trip with Joe and our son.

Favorite Movie:  The 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables and the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.

Food I hate:  Really hard to find. I like to eat.

Food I love:  Asparagus, steak, Reuben sandwiches, French dip, Kasnudeln (Austrian), any kind of potatoes,

One embarrassing moment:  When my high school principal informed all of the people at graduation that I got my scholarship only because the person who had better grades had taken another one.

Most famous person I have met face-to-face:  The President of Italy in 1963

Good childhood memories:  Coming to Denver to visit my grandmother, going to school, playing outside in Laramie, Christmas. I had a wonderful childhood.
